County Championship Days 4,3&1 and CB40 cricket - 10th August

It's getting hard to keep up but three Championship games came to conclusions today, while two more began, plus a CB40 match. I hope you followed that.

County Championship

Day 4

Somerset v Nottinghamshire - Match drawn
Not - 156 & 176-5
Som - 249

Somerset were denied a second batting point as a depleated Nottinghamshire bowling attack slowly wrapped up the innings. The match was clearly going nowhere and Somerset's plan was to put on as many as possible and try to bowl the visitors out. In the end though they only lead by 93, as Swann finished with 3 for 62.
Nottinghamshire lost a wicket on 30 and a second on 85, but 54 from Hales and 46 from Taylor took the game towards a draw. Somerset did pick up five wickets but it was too little too late as the title chasers had to settle for a draw.

Points: Somerset 7, Nottinghamshire 6

Day 3

Warwickshire v Worcestershire - Warwickshire win by 7 wickets
Wor - 246 & 145
War - 132 & 263-3

Warwickshire completed a comfortable victory, an impressive feat having been 114 behind on the first innings. Chopra went for 58 with the score on 100-1, but 77 were scored for the second wicket to effectively take the game beyond Worcestershire. Westwood was caught and bowled for 83 and Porterfield departed for 37. Troughton (34*) and Maddy (45*) took the hosts home though with a stand of 70 as Warwickshire go clear at the top, with teams behind them drawing.

Points: Warwickshire 19, Worcestershire 4

Kent v Essex - Essex win by 7 wickets
Ken - 226 & 101
Ess - 273 & 55-3

Kent were flattened inside three days despite the scores being reasonably close after the first innings. The hosts though went from 9-3 overnight to 12-4 and then 26-5. A small revival managed to take them to 100, but with Chambers picking up 4 for 31 and Napier and Singh taking 3 wickets each, Essex were well on top.
In the end it took 18.3 overs for the visitors to wrap up the win after three wickets fell. Pettini (19) was there though to finish the game for only Essex's second win the Championship this season.

Day 1

Sussex v Middlesex
Sussex won the toss and decided to field
Mid - 170
Sus - 106-3

An excellent bowling performance by Khan (5 for 25) was the base for a solid day for Sussex. Magoffin (3 for 45) made the early inroads but Khan then took over as Middlesex slipped from 56-2 to 65-6. Runs down the order, including 32 from Rayner and 34 by Murtagh boosted the visitors but they failed to pick up any batting bonus points.
Sussex went to 63-1 before losing two quick wickets, but Joyce (49*) lifted the hosts past 100 before the close.

Northamptonshire v Leicestershire
Leicestershire won the toss and decided to field
Nor - 300-5

Northamptonshire won the moring and evening sessions and are well on top after day one. The hosts added 126 for the first wicket, before O'Brien was caught for 70. Leicestershire then fought back throughout the afternoon as Sales, Wakely and Newton made 13 between them to leave Northamptonshire on 161-4. Peters though went to an excellent, if slow, century and Hall made 59 as the pair put on 139. Hall was caught off the final ball of the day but Peters is not out overnight on 137.

CB40 Cricket

Glamorgan v Hampshire - Hampshire win by 107 runs
Glamorgan won the toss and decided to field
Ham - 227
Gla - 120

Wickets fell in pairs for Hampshire as they made starts but couldn't build them into big partnerships. The fifth wicket fell just after the half way mark as all of Glamorgan's bowlers applied pressure. Vince's 48 was the top score up to this point and Glamorgan were on top.
Wickets continued to fall throughout the innings but McKenzie held up one end and went to 88, taking Hampshire past 200 before being caught. Briggs then smashed 25 in 15 balls with two 6s as the visitors finished on a creditable 227.

Glamorgan made a dreadful start to their reply as Wood ripped into the top order, taking the first three wickets. 28 from Wagg and 27* from Walters lifted the total marginally but Hampshire continued to wrest control of the match.
Briggs took 4 for 32 as the game spiralled to a quick conclusion and Wood returned to take the final two wickets in consecutive balls to finish with 5 for 22.

Star Player: Wood, for his outstanding bowling performance that easily won the match for Hampshire.
