County Championship Day 1 and CB40 Cricket - 1st August

No time for a break we dive into another round of County Championship matches with 6 games beginning today, as well as a CB40 match. Plenty of rain meant a lot of lost time but still cricket galore.

County Championship

Day 1

Middlesex v Warwickshire
Warwickshire won the toss and decided to field
Mid - 324-7

With the Olympic archery still going at Lords Middlesex return to their outground, Uxbridge, well known as a batting pitch; Warwickshire, however, still chose to bowl first. The hosts went to 41 before losing Rogers while Denly made runs early on. A second wicket fell on 97, but after that Middlesex built throughout the day as Denly and Malan put on 135 together. Denly was lbw tragically for 95, but Malan made it to 106 before he was clean bowled.
Malan's wicket caused a collapse as Warwickshire saw a way back into the contest. They took four wickets for just 5 runs, including Berg falling first ball, but Rayner (16*) and Roland-Jones (13*) took Middlesex past 300 and to the close of play without further loss.

Glamorgan v Gloucestershire
Glamorgan won the toss and decided to bat
Gla - 64-6

Play didn't start until the late afternoon, but when it did Gloucestershire were soon in a dominant position. Rees departed for 4 with the score on 12, then seven runs later three wickets fell without any addition to the score. Walters and North went in consecutive balls and Bragg in the following over. Wright and Allenby came to the rescue and steadied the home side with a partnership of 38, but with Allenby's (25) dismissal came Wallace's, one run later leaving Glamorgan floundering on 58-6. Shortly after the rain retuned and play was ended for the day, with Gloucestershire well on top.

Nothamptonshire v Yorkshire
Yorkshire won the toss and decided to bat
Yor - 249

Northamptonshire enjoyed one of their better days of the season as they tucked into the Yorkshire middle order after the visitors had made it to 148-2. At that point the hosts will have been wondering where the next wicket was coming and, as so often happens, it was a run out that broke the 104 run partnership. Jaques was the man to go, for 75, and Daggett then took three wickets to reduce Yorkshire to 185-6.
Runs down the order helped the innings to limp along but the hosts continued to pick up wickets until Yorkshire were eventually all out just before the close.

Lancashire v Somerset
Somerset won the toss and decided to field
Lan - 129-5

Somerset made early inroads with Trego picking up two wickets, but Brown and Prince fought back to take Lancashire to 91, before rain interrupted. When play restarted Brown moved onto 39 before he was bowled by Trego. Croft made 7 and immediately after he was out Trego picked up his fourth wicket by having Prince (51) caught behind.

Sussex v Worcestershire
Sussex won the toss and decided to field
Wor - 162
Sus - 22-0

Good bowling from Sussex reduced Worcestershire to 32-3 and then 68-4, at which point extras was the top scorer with 20, and Magoffin had incredible figures of 9 overs, 7 maidens, 5 runs and 2 wickets. Later he picked up another two wickets to finish with 4 for 34 as Sussex blew over the Worcestershire line up. Late runs lifted the visitors' total a little, including 30* from Jones, but Sussex held the upper hand.
The openers then played out a watchful 7 overs to take the hosts to 22 by the close.

Essex v Leicestershire
Essex won the toss and decided to bat
Ess - 161-0

Play was delayed at Chelmsford, but the hosts made a strong start going to a 100 run opening partnership. Westley and Mickleburgh both went to half centuries and continued to build throughout the evening. Leicestershire have already used six bowlers and none of them could find a breakthrough before the close with the openers finishing on 75 and 81 respectively.

CB40 Cricket

Nottinghamshire v Surrey - Surrey win by 4 wickets
Surrey won the toss and decided to field
Not - 149
Sur - 151-6

Surrey made a good start on a difficult Trent Bridge pitch with Lumb being bowled for 7 after stuggling to find the boundary in the opening overs. Wessels was caught for 13 and Patel 1, leaving the hosts on 44-3. This became 52-4 when Hales (25) was caught and Nottinghamshire needed some major rebuilding.
Fortunately they had Voges and Read at the crease, both men who can hang around and pick up singles, which is what they did. They took the home side to 119 before disaster struck with both men going for just 6 runs. Voges had made 36 with no boundaries and Read 35 with just 1. As the last recognised batsmen there was little hope for the rest of the innings and indeed Surrey wrapped up the last four wickets fairly easily.
In total Middlesex had conceeded just seven 4s and one 6. Dernbach picked up 3 for 39 and Spriegel 2 for 21, as they bowled Nottinghamshire out with two overs left.

Nottinghamshire opened with Samit Patel and then Gurney. The latter bowled four dot balls and then finished by removing Hamilton-Brown and Roy, leaving the visitors on 3-2. Davies (35) and Wilson (29) then put on 60 in a steady partnership to put Surrey back on top. White and Mullaney removed both of them, however, as Nottinghamshire restricted the visitors again.
In the over comparison Nottinghamshire led at the half-way stage by 6 runs, and by 12 runs after 24 overs. Mullaney's 6th over went for 11, Spriegel hitting him over the rope, but he fought back with a maiden in his 7th over. Surrey were left needing 46 from the last 10 overs.
Two balls later Mullaney picked up his second wicket with de Bruyn caught by Voges and Surrey ended the over 22 behind on the comparison. Spriegel was batting carefully and keeping the runs ticking over, but with 6 overs left Surrey required 31 meaning the required run rate was above 5. Spriegel then picked off White for a four and the batsman's second 6, before White responded by having him caught by Wessels for 47.
A couple more boundaries took ther visitors to within 10 and the game was all but over. Ansari then crashed White for another 6 to win to win the match with 3.5 overs to spare.

Star Player: Spriegel, for his containing bowling and top scoring innings.
