County Championship Days 4,3&2 and CB40 Cricket - 9th August

One more CB40 match to go with the Championship encounters this week, which are beginning to draw towards conclusions. Plenty of wickets falling today and lots to keep up with.

County Championship

Day 4

Gloucestershire v Hampshire - Match drawn
Glo - 271 & 277
Ham - 276 & 0-0

Gloucestershire lost their fifth wicket (and first of the day) with the score on 142, but then recovered to 229. Tomlinson then picked up two in two but Cockbain went to a splendid century to take the game away from Hampshire. No declaration was forthcoming and so the game headed towards a draw and once the host were all out Hampshire only batted for two overs before the captains shook hands.

Points: Gloucestershire 8, Hampshire 8

Day 3

Durham v Surrey - Durham win by an innings and 38 runs
Sur - 129 & 143
Dur - 310

Durham finished off Surrey easily this morning as the visitors went from an impossible situation of 69-5 overnight to 143 all out. The wickets were shared as all five bowlers picked up wickets, while Burns' 39 was the highest score of the innings.
That is Durham's second win in two as they strive to get off the bottom of the table, while Surrey continue their downward slide towards the relegation places.

Points: Durham 22, Surrey 3

Somerset v Nottinghamshire
Not - 156
Som - 187-6

Somerset continued to apply the pressure on Nottinghamshire today by bowling them out for a poor 156. Thomas picked up his third wicket of the innings very early by having Voges caught by Trescothick, who went on to take five catches in the innings. Read made a gritty 52 but became the first of Hussain's 4 for 29, as the bowler ran through thee tail.
The visitors fought back immediately as Phillips had Trescothick caught second ball, but Suppiah (35) and Jones (28) added 63 for the second wicket. Adams then removed both of them but Hildreth (..) and Buttler (39) picked up where they left off to take Somerset almost up to Nottinghamshire's total. The pair really began to enjoy themselves in the evening sunshine on a pitch that was finally becoming good for batting on and hit boundaries all around the ground.
Franks, who had a big burden on his shoulders after Gurney and Adams spent most of the evening session off the pitch, picked up two wickets quickly and Swann had Trego caught by Read to reduce Somerset to 175-6 shortly before the close.

Day 2

Warwickshire v Worcestershire
Wor - 246 & 145
War - 132 & 79-0

Things went from bad to worse for Warwickshire in the morning as they went from 19-3 to 34-5; Russell picking up his second and third wickets. A while later Troughton and Ambrose fell in quick succession to leave the hosts on 77-7. Clarke (61) took them past 100 but the end came quickly as Richardson finished with 3 for 36 and Russell 4 for 43.
Wickets continued to tumble as Worcestershire slipped to 4-2 but thirties from Pardoe and Solanki lifted the visitors' score. Barker and Patel picked three and four wickets respectively to keep Warwickshire in the game and there were 5 lbw decisions in the innings, but the hosts were set 260 to win on what was clearly a difficult wicket to bat on.
Warwickshire though showed no signs of being rolled over for a second time as Chopra (46*) and Westwood (32*) added 79 in 21 overs before the close to put themselves well ahead in this otherwise close contest.

Kent v Essex
Ken - 226 & 9-3
Ess - 273

Essex batted well to put themselves in the better positon although they had to fight after losing early wickets. Coles and Shreck combined to skittlee the top four for just 23 runs, but ten Doeschate (33) began the recovery. Foster (76) and Wheater (82) then added 126 for the sixth wicket and Napier continued their good work to take the visitors past Kent's total.
Shreck finished with five wickets for the second time in two games as he polished off the tail, but Essex had claimed a 47 run lead. Napier Chambers and Singh then picked up a wicket each to put the visitors in an excellent position going into day 3.

CB40 Cricket

Northamptonshire v Yorkshire - Yorkshire win by 69 runs
Northamptonshire won the toss and decided to field
Yor - 262-8
Nor - 193

Three of the top four made starts for Yorkshire but failed to go on to big scores, although they all scored quickly. Jaques though made an excellent 87 from 83 balls to put the visitors in a strong position just after the half way stage.
The 200 came up in the 33rd over; Northamptonshire had already used six bowlers and may have been regretting fielding first. Rashid added a quick 25 and Ballance 15 as Yorkshire went past 250 and on to a big score. Daggett picked up his fourth wicket by having Rafiq caught, but the visitors went on to finish on 262, setting a required run rate of 6.6.

It didn't take Newton long to launch the ball over the ropes as Northamptonshire made a positive start to their reply. Still, only three boundaries were hit the opening 8 powerplay overs, but the hosts had moved on to 40-0, keeping the game very even.
Rashid made the breakthrough in his first over, having Newton caught for 30, then, four overs later he had Wakely stumped for 8, to Yorkshire back in front. O'Brien scored 38, adding 30 for the third wicket before he was also caught off Rashid, leaving Northamptonshire on 103-3 at the half way stage.
Five overs later the game was slipping away from the home side as Rashid picked up his fourth wicket. The required run rate was soon touching ten an over and the pressure was mounting. It told when Sales (55) and Murphy (6) were both run out.
Ashraf finally became the second bowler to take a wicket when he bowled Middlebrook and the game edged towards the close. Hall added 28 but Northamptonshire were defeated by 69 runs as Wardlaw picked up the final two wickets with the last two balls.

Star Player: Jaques for his 87 that helped Yorkshire post a total beyond reach.
