County Championship Days 3,2&1 and CB40 Cricket - 8th August

Another two Championship matches takes the total of four-day matches this week to five, and there was another CB40 match as that competition ticks along.

County Championship

Day 3
Gloucestershire v Hampshire
Glo - 271 & 102-4
Ham - 276

McKenzie starred with the bat for Hampshire and took the visitors to 218-4 before being bowled for 94. Ervine added 44 but the lower order failed to assist him and Gloucestershire were able to keep the defecit to just 5 and set up an exciting match.
Nicol (13) and Howell (36) then added 51 for the first wicket but Hampshire fought back taking four wickets for 21 runs; Balcombe picking up 3 for 19.

Day 2

Durham v Surrey
Sur - 129 & 69-5
Dur - 310

Durham extended their lead in the morning going to 190-4 before Benkenstein was bowled for 69. Collingwood then went on to 78 before he was also dismissed by Dernbach. 46 from Mustard and 32 from Thorp took the hosts past 300 and they were eventually all out with a lead of 181.
Surrey though couldn't match Durham's batting standard but continued where they left off in the first innings by losing wickets regularly. Five went down before the close, including a run out, and only Burns (..*) has managed to last more than 35 deliveries.

Somerset v Nottinghamshire
Not - 42-3

More rain wiped out most of the day as only 11.2 overs were possible. Somerset again made the best of the running by picking up two wickets, but with two days down the game still has a long way to go.

Day 1

Warwickshire v Worcestershire
Worcestershire won the toss and decided to bat
Wor - 246
War - 19-3

Three wickets fell in the morning session as Mitchell, Pardoe and Ali between them provided only 21 of the first 73 runs. Hughes though was on fine form and with Solanki (57) added 124 for the fourth wicket. Warwickshire fought back to have the visitors on 197-5 but Hughes went to a splendid century and continued to put Worcestershire in a good position.
Patel then smashed through the lower order as Worcestershire were skittled towards the close losing 5 wickets for 7 runs. Patel finished with 4 for 72, while Hughes was left high and dry on 135 not out.
If Warwickshire thought they would finish the day on top though they were in for a surprise as they lost three wickets in the eleven overs before the close. Richardson took 2 for 7 in six overs.

Kent v Essex
Kent won the toss and decided to bat
Ken - 226
Ess - 14-0

An odd day saw several Kent batsmen make starts but few go on with only Powell (62) passing fifty. Earlier the hosts had gone on to 58-1 but regular wickets throughout the afternoon kept them pegged back. Mahmood helped Kent past 200 in the evening session but Masters, Chambers and Napier finished with 3 wickets apiece to bowl out the hosts before the close.
There was still time for nine overs but Essex played them out without too many scares to go into their second day with all their wickets intact.

CB40 Cricket

Derbyshire v Sussex
Derbyshire won the toss and decided to field
Sus - 167
Der - 170-4

Sussex collapsed from 63-1 after a steady start, to 95-7 as the middle order rolled over. The top four all made starts, but Goodwin's 40 was the best score as a couple of run outs complimented the good bowling from Derbyshire. A stand of 50 restored some parity before two wickets fell with the score on 145. Werners tried to lift Sussex towards the end but was the last man out for 35, with 2.4 overs still remaining.
Sussex made the perfect reply by running out Khawaja before he'd faced a ball, before also removing Hughes (11) and Durston (30) to leave Derbyshire on 55-3. Madsen and Redfern kept the hosts just ahead of the required run rate and at the half way stage Derbyshire were 88-3. Ten overs later though the game was all but gone for Sussex as they had failed to pick up any more wickets while the batsmen had added 47, to leave them needing just 33 from the last ten overs.
A couple of slow overs ensued but Madsen went to a hard fought fifty in 91 balls. Redfern almost joined him but was stumped for 49. It was too late for Sussex though as Madsen went to 64* and took Derbyshire over the line with 2 overs and 2 balls to spare.

Star Player: Really this was a bowlers game but the wickets were shared, so the award goes to Madsen for his determined effort that made sure of the vicotry for Derbyshire.
