Wickets throughout the morning from Ali, Balcombe and Mascarenhas restricted Gloucestershire's top order as they slipped to 85-4, with only Housego (51), making a notable score. Marshall (75) and Cockbain (51) fought back though, taking the hosts past 200 in a partnership worth 125 to put Hampshire on the back foot.
Both of them then fell lbw to leave Gloucestershire on 218-6, and, after 16 from Muchall he was bowled by Tomlinson, the fifth Hampshire bowler to pick up a wicket. Saxelby (7) was caught before the close but 24* from Coughtrie took the home side past 250, although Hampshire are perhaps slightly ahead.
