County Championshire Round 5 - Day 1

The rain has stayed away and has allowed an interesting mix of matches to develop. There have been runs galore in some, while others have seen wickets tumbling. This week certainly seems set up to be better than the last. We start in Birmingham, where 15 wickets have fallen.

Day 1

Warwickshire v Durham
Warwickshire won the toss and decided to field.
Dur - 163
War - 116-5

Warwickshire would not have imagined being only even in this game after Durham's first innings. Keith Barker took three wickets in an over, shortly after lunch as the visitors were put to the sword by the team on top of the table. Onions top scored with 36 as he and Blackwell put on 49 for the ninth wicket, but eventually Durham were all out for 163, Barker finishing with 5 for 33.
Onions, though, wasn't finished and soon was tucking into the Warwickshire order as wickets continued to tumble. The home side were reduced to 5-3 before tea. Bell, who had taken a stunning catch earlier, led the fight back and is 59* at the close, but before that lost Troughton as Warwickshire found themsleves on 14-4. Maddy scored 35 but he too fell before the end to leave the game in the balance.

Derbyshire v Gloucestershire
Derbyshire won the toss and decided to bat.
Der - 362-9

Madsen (101), Durston (68) and Redfern (55) all contributed as Derbyshire dominated with the bat to put them in a good position at stumps. Wickets fell in twos, but there were several good partnerships that kept the home side on top. Gloucestershire used seven different bowlers and all bar one picked up wickets, but none of them was able to apply constant pressure meaning the visitors will have to bat well tomorrow to match Derbyshire.

Lancashire v Nottinghamshire
Nottinghamshire won the toss and decided to bat.
Not - 169
Lan - 48-1

Read won the toss for the first time this season, but, despite the added presence of two England bowlers he elected to bat first. Chapple then ripped through the top order taking 3 for 11 from his first seven overs. This is the first game to be played at Old Trafford since the wicket has been turned through 90 degrees, and so it is possible there was some uncertainty over how the pitch would play, but it certainly seems as though Read made the wrong decision.
Edwards was the first to go, chopping the ball onto his stumps. Hales went, lbw, with the score on 15 and then Lumb was unlucky to be caught for 3. He cut the ball to Anderson in the gully who couldn't hang on but somehow parried the ball to Prince at third slip.
Having bowled his opening spell, Anderson left the field with a bruised thumb, and when Smith pulled up in his delivery stride, shortly before lunch, Lancashire briefly only had ten players on the field, until a second sub could be found.
Wickets continued to fall through the afternoon and only Patel seemed able to resist, although once the 8th wicket had fallen he began to hit out. However after hitting Procter for 6 into the building site he holed out going for a similar shot.
When it came to Lancashire's turn to bat they had none of Nottinghamshire's problems, hitting the ball sweetly to all parts of the ground. Adams though had the final say, taking a wicket with the last ball of the day. Lancashire however, are firmly on top.

Yorkshire v Leicestershire
Leicestershire won the toss and decided to field.
Yor - 329-5

Yorkshire put 28 on for the first wicket before losing three wickets for 5 runs. Root, Sayers and Jaques were all dismissed by different bowlers as Leicestershire took an early lead. Gale and (80)Bairstow (141*) though took the home side to 193 in a partnership worth 160, as the home side claimed a strong advantage after the first day. Leicestershire will be disappointed not to have made more of their good start.

Glamorgan v Essex
Glamorgan won the toss and decided to field.
Ess - 259-9d
Gla -
Petersen starred with the bat to keep Essex in the game as regular wickets fell at the other end. He scored 145 on a day when Bopara was dismissed for 0 and Cook was caught behind for 9. Willoughby did not bat but did bowl one over before the close. Petersen's magnificent innings included 16 fours and a six and came off 223 balls, and only Pettini (56) was able to give him much company.

Northamptonshire v Hampshire
Hampshire won the toss and decided to field.
Nor - 218
Ham - 42-3

Northamptonshire got off to a flyer, scoring 68 from 18 overs before losing their first wicket. Runs continued to come but no batsmen made it to fifty as late wickets skittled the home side. At one point they were 173-4, but they lost their last 5 wickets for just 21 runs, to possibly give Hampshire the edge.
The visitors though did lose 3 wickets themselves and batted slowly up to the close.

Note -
Sussex were bowled out for 58 by Leeds/Bradford Uni as Lancashire Academy player Luis Reece took 7 for 21 in 10.3 overs
