County Championship Round 5 - Days 3/4

There was some solid batting and more quality bowling as three games went to results today and the Championship moved on a stage before the Pro40 really kicks in over the bank holiday. We start at Old Trafford where the 2010 Champions polished off the 2011 Champions in the morning.

Day 4

Lancashire v Nottinghamshire - Nottinghamshire win by 185 runs
Not - 169 & 304
Lan - 146 & 142

Lancashire's lower order put up some stern resistance this morning to defy Nottinghamshire for a while. Indeed after 90 minutes only two wickets had fallen, one to Broad and the other to Adams. However, shortly before the scheduled lunch interval Chapple swung the bat once too often and was bowled by Swann. Patel then had Anderson caught for his second duck of the game, which meant the extra half-hour was taken before the break. Less than fifteen minutes were required as Patel wrapped things up, Kerrigan was caught by Broad to give Nottinghamshire their third win of the season, and their first at Old Trafford (in the Championship) since 1997. Lancashire, meanwhile, are yet to taste victory as Champions, a title that is rapidly slipping away from them.
Nottinghamshire take 19 points and Lancashire collect 3.

Yorkshire v Leicestershire - Yorkshire win by an innings and 22 runs.
Yor - 447
Lei - 116 & 309 (f/o)

There was more good batting today at Headingly where Leicestershire managed to delay Yorkshire's victory until five o'clock. Cobb (69) was eventually out after a stand of 128 with Boyce (122), who helped take the score to 284 before he was bowled by Sidebottom. It was Patterson, however, who took the bowling honours, with figures of 5 for 77, without which the visitors might have managed to rescue themselves from a seemingly impossible position. As it happened they didn't, but they did push it close.
Yorkshire gain 23 points, but Leicestershire get just 1.

Northamptonshire v Hampshire - Northamptonshire win by 117 runs.
Nor - 218 & 232-9d
Ham - 154 & 179

Northamptonshire extended their lead this morning before declaring, setting Hampshire 297 to win. All of the top order chipped in although none of them scored particularly quickly. Clearly they felt they had plenty of time to bowl Hampshire out.
Hampshire looked to make a go of chasing down the daunting target and reached 92-2 in just 21 overs, but then disaster struck as they lost 3 wickets for 14 runs, all of them to Daggett. It was Willey, however, who did the real damage, as he took 5 for 39, including the wicket of top scorer Carberry for 61. The last four wickets all fell for 14 runs as the home side finished quickly.
Northamptonshire take 20 points, while Hampshire get 3.

Derbyshire v Gloucestershire - Match drawn
Der - 388
Glo - 206 & 409-4 (f/o)

Gloucestershire increased their lead to further take this game away from Derbyshire despite following on. Williamson picked up where he'd left off last night and went on to 128 before he was caught behind. Very careful work from Marshall (90), Cockbain (63*) and Gidman (33*) helped to take the visitors out of danger. Sadly by the time they felt they were in a safe enough position it was too late in the day for a result to be likely and so the captains shook hands. This would have made a great (5-day) Test match.
In Gloucestershire's second innings Derbyshire managed to use 10 different bowlers although only two of them picked up wickets.
Derbyshire pick up 10 points, to Gloucestershire's 7.

Glamorgan v Essex - Match drawn
Ess - 259-9d & 166-9d
Gla - 187 & 99-5

It was all swings and roundabouts as this became thrilling game for a while. Glamorgan fought back despite conceding a first innings lead, by reducing Essex to 37-5 in the morning session. However Westley and Smith put on 79 for the 6th wicket, to wrest back some initiative. Eventually the visitors declared with a lead of 238, to give themselves time to bowl Glamorgan out.
The home side might have fancied going for the win too, but quick wickets from Essex meant they collapsed to 37-4 before recoving to only lose one more wicket by the close.

Day 3

Middlesex v Worcestershire
Mid - 327-7
Wor - 45-2

Once again bad weather in the capital prevented a full day's play but there was one good performance. Denly scored his first century of the season, finishing not out on 134, after helping Middlesex to three batting points. Richardson was back at it again with the ball picking up 5 for 89 to take his tally for the summer to 24, if he keeps this up it is likely he will reach his 500th first class wicket before the end of the season, (he's currently on 467).
A draw still remains the mostly likely outcome, unless the captains feel there is anything to be gained from a deal.

Tomorrow sees six games in the Pro40 competition, followed by six more on Monday, as the tournament really fires into life. Tomorrow there will also be up-to-date County Championship tables, once the game at Lords has reached its conclusion.
