County Championship Round 6 - Day 1

Players are starting to get very frustrated with the weather, but that's England for you! Fortunately the rest of the week is supposed to be drier. Despite the limited number of overs, however, there have been some surprising scores, and more tumbling wickets. We begin at Durham, where 16 wickets have fallen in the match already.

Day 1

Durham v Somerset
Somerset won the toss and decided to field.
Dur - 125
Som - 220-8

Durham was the only ground to get a full days play, but the home side's torrid season continues. Having got to 53 for the loss of just one wicket everything seemed calm, but then the Somerset bowling line up kicked into action, as all four bowlers picked up wickets. Stoneman top scored with 33, but when he fell with the team on 90, the rest just collapsed. Overton, the pick of the bowlers, took 4 for 38.
However it seemed for a while that 125 might not be such a bad score. Somerset's top order, still missing Trescothic, were blown away faster than Durham's as they slipped to 45-4. Onions took a wicket with the first ball of the innings, and another in his second over. However, despite losing Trego with the score on 95 Somerset have recovered, and more as they built a big lead by the close. Kieswetter played calmly for his 60*, but Meschede decided attack was the way to go, hitting 62 off 60 balls, to put Somerset well in the ascendancy. Late wickets though kept Durham in the game, as Thorp finished the day with 4 for 53.

Nottinghamshire v Middlesex
Nottinghamshire won the toss and decided to bat.
Not - 132-1

For the sixth game running Nottinghamshire are batting first, but this time on a track that looks good. However that didn't stop the usual early wicket. Edwards dragged the ball onto his stumps, although it only just brushed the bail. After that however, Hales (71*) and Lumb (51*) made full use of the good track, the short boundary and the quick outfield, in a flawless second wicket partnership. The bowling has been tight, particularly from Finn, who took the wicket, but has lacked penetration. Nottinghamshire will be disappointed that just as their batting reached new levels for the summer the rain came down, but they will hope to carry on tomorrow and put pressure on Middlesex.

Essex v Kent
Essex won the toss and decided to field.
Ken - 17-5

An astonishing 9.4 overs were all that was possible at Chelmsford and Essex will be very thankful they won the toss, or they might have found themselves in a similar position.
Things began badly for Kent; they lost Newman to the second ball of the day, caught behind off the bowlig of Masters. That though was the opening bowler's only wicket in a five over spell. The rest of the damage was done by Willoughby, who currently has figures of 4.4o-1m-8r-4w. Of those four wickets, two were lbw, one was bowled and the other also caught behind. Nash is the highest scorer so far with 6, although Kent have shown something of a recovery, seeing as they were 9-5 after 7 overs and 1 ball. At that point their all time record of fewest runs in an innings was in danger, it stands at 18, set in 1867.

Leicestershire v Northamptonshire
Leicestershire won the toss and decided to field.
Nor - 99-3

Coetzer (43*) and Peters (32) held together the top order for Northamptonshire in a fairly even contest thus far. Rain halted play after 31.2 overs and the players never came back out. Hoggard has picked up 1 wicket and Joseph 2, to add to the 15 he has already collected this season.

Worcestershire v Surrey
Worcestershire won the toss and decided to bat.
Wor - 58-0

Only 26.1 overs were possible at New Road but Worcestershire made a solid start with Mitchell (30*) and Klinger (16*) both still at the crease and hoping to pick up tomorrow where they left off. Surrey's bowlers have kept scoring to a minimum, but failed to make any further impact, which they will hope to change in the morning.

Sussex v Lancashire
No play due to rain.
Hampshire v Derbyshire
No play due to rain
Gloucestershire v Yorkshire
No play due to rain.
