County Championship Cricket - D3/2 - 20th July

No new games today, but plenty of play in those already in progress. Here's what happened.

County Championship

Day 3

Lancashire v Worcestershire - Worcestershire win by 205 runs
Wor - 291 & 139
Lan - 162 & 63
An astonishing day at Old Trafford has shown that the Twenty20 break has done little for last years Champions. Trailing by 129 on the first innings the hosts bowled excellently on a tough day for batting, and led by Croft, who had a superb match with the ball, rolled Worcestershire over for 139. Croft took 6 for 41.
Chasing 268 with well over a day to go should have been, if not easy, at least well within Lancashire's capabilities but the visitors made a mockery of their batsmen. First Richardson had Horton lbw second ball for 0, then followed up by having the other opener, Moore, caught for 9, with the score on 13. Before a run was added the hero of Worcestershire's first round of bowling (Ali, 6 for 67) had Brown caught and Lancashire were reeling on 13-3. This was Ali's day, and possibly match, as he soon had Croft and Prince both caught behind and 11 runs later Smith also went 'Caught Scott, Bowled Ali'. Cross (20) the only man to reach double figures took the home side to 50 before also being caught of Ali (his 5th wicket). Chapple and Shahzad departed on the same score (61) both to Choudry, but Ali cleaned up by having Hogg stumped (the second of the innings and Scott's 3rd of the match (his 7th dismissal)). Ali took 6 for 29, easily breaking his personal best (which was made in the first innnings), and also taking 12 for 96 in the match.
So 20 wickets had fallen in the day and Lancashire are now in even worse trouble having won just 1 of their 11 games, while Worcestershire close the gap on them to 5 points, and have 2 games in hand.

Points: Lancashire 3, Worcestershire 21
Sussex v Durham
Dur - 231 & 80-7
Sus - 231

In an unusual twist Sussex were dismissed for exactly the same score as Durham leaving the match as ballanced as it is possible to get after one innings each. Durham, who are still looking for their first win of the campaign, will have been over the moon at their fight back after Sussex reached 221-6. Rushworth and Thorp both took 4 wickets, as only 10 off 7 balls from Panesar kept the scores even.
Sussex though did not let this get to them but used the tricky batting conditions to help their bowlers too and soon had the visitors reeling. Magoffin (the pick of the bowlers from the first innings) took three early wickets leaving Durham on 10-3. 19 runs later Smith and Benkenstein depated on the same score, and Mustard was caught for just 6. Durham were now only 38-6 and staring down the barrel. Collingwood though, as so often, came to the rescue, sort of, by adding 24 with Borthwick, before the latter was also caught. At the close Collingwood is still there on 29*, but he will have to score a lot more tomorrow if Durham are to dig themselves out of this huge hole.

Somerset v Warwickshire
War - 387-7 & 66-3
Som - 254

Warwickshire continue to dominate their latest game after going to 400, and maximum batting points, with Troughton out for 132. Thomas picked up his wicket along with five others to finish with 6 for 60.
The visitors then set to work on Somerset although Suppiah (54) and Compton (73*) batted well at the top of the order. Patel then took his chance and began to pick up wickets regularly running through the middle and lower order on his way to 7 for 75. Having got to 155-3 and 195-4 Somerset will have hoped to challenge Warwickshire's total, but in the end they were lucky to avoid the follow-on.
Warwickshire then began to bat again and although they've lost 3 wickets thier lead is back above 200, giving them the perfect opportunity to wrap up a win tomorrow.

Gloucestershire v Leicestershire
Lei - 162 & 142-5
Glo - 229

Leicestershire bowled well in the morning and restricted Gloucestershire to 132-7, thanks mainly to White (3 for 62). 37s from Marshall and Young, and 57 from Fuller though took the hosts past 200 and Leicestershire will have been pleased to finish the innings quickly and not conceed to big a defecit. Buck finished with 3 for 50.
The visitors' openers (Smith (36) and Thornely (39)) then put on 66 for the first wicket and all but wiped out Gloucestershire's lead. The home side fought back once more though reducing Leicestershire to 89-3 before 30* from Sarwan lifted them again. Two late wickets however have put Gloucestershire firmly in the driving seat going into the final day.

Nottinghamshire v Surrey

No play due to a waterlogged outfield

Derbyshire v Yorkshire
Yor - 219
Der - 135-7

Day 2

Kent v Glamorgan
Ken - 456-9

Kent added 146 runs in the overs possible today, for the loss of five wickets to give themselves a good lead over Glamorgan. Nash was out early for 114, after adding just 4 to the overnight score, and he was quickly followed by his partner of most of yesterday, Stevens, who was caught for 123. Their partnership was ended at 204. The lower order mostly made small scores but Jones (69*) has kept the innings going, taking the total past 400 and then 450. Harris picked up the 9th wicket taking his tally to 5 for 118.

Essex v Hampshire
