County Champ Day 2/1 and Pro40 Cricket

The season rolls on at a terrific pace; four more matches began in the County Championship today, adding to the one that started yesterday, plus two Pro40 matches. Rain is and will continue to be a problem, but there has been plenty of action to keep us interested today.

County Championship

Day 2

Worcestershire v Durham
Dur - 234
Wor - 89-2

Durham continued to build steadily but still none of their batsmen reached 50, meaning they had to settle for a below par total. Richardson picked up 4 for 52. In reply Worcestershire began well, putting on 63 for the first wicket but Stokes took 2 wickets for 7 runs in his first 5 overs. The home side then moved on to 100 before rain curtailed play for the day, with Hughes 52 not out.

Day 1
Middlesex v Nottinghamshire
Nottinghamshire won the toss and decided to field
Mid - 98
Not - 114-4

The start was delayed due to the dampness of the pitch and Nottinghamshire made full use of the conditions by taking a couple of quick wickets, before going on to decimate the Middlesex top order and leaving England captain, Andrew Strauss, struggling to hold up the other end. The first was caught behind and the next three all caught in the slips. It took Adams just 3 balls to take his first wicket, and then had Simpson bowled first ball. The hat-trick ball hit Berg on his pads but the huge appeal was turned down. Leaving the hosts 34-5.
Strauss (50) and Berg (32) took the score to 97-5, but then Adams returned taking two more wickets off the first and last balls of an over. The tail collapsed, with all of the last 4 batsmen going for 0, adding to the 2 earlier Adams finished with 6 for 32.
Nottinghamshire began steadily and were 24 before Hales went lbw. Wessels (34) and Lumb (35*) put on 49 for the second wicket. the visitors passed Middlesex's total, but two late wickets gave the home side a small lift before the close.

Surrey v Lancashire
Surrey won the toss and decided to field
Lan - 247-3

Lancashire survived a damp morning session at Guildford after Surrey had put them in, getting to 47 before losing their first wicket and at lunch they were 112-1. Horton and Brown (49) put on 122 for the second wicket and Horton then went on to take the score to 233-3 before he was out for 110. Their pace isn't quick but they have a great platform to really put pressure on Surrey.

Gloucestershire v Essex
Gloucestershire won the toss and decided to bat
Glo - 147-2

Just 49 overs were possible on day 1 at Cheltenham but the hosts progressed well on to 147-2 by the close. Cowan (51*) and Housego (60) put on 108 for the second wicket before eighteen year old Topley bowled Housego, having earlier picked up the first wicket too.

Hampshire v Yorkshire
No play due to rain

Pro40 Cricket

Netherlands v Leicestershire - Leicestershire win by 33 runs
Netherlands won the toss and decided to feild
Lei - 208-7
Net - 175

A delayed start reduced the game to 36 overs-a-side, and the Netherlands immediately had Leicestershire on the back foot, removing Cobb with the 5th ball of the first over for 0. But 86 from Thonely, off just 77 balls and including five 6s, lifted the visitors to a decent score.
Hoggard picked up the first wicket and then, unfortunately, Myburgh, who had hit 5 boundaries in his first 12 balls, had to retire hurt. The visitors took full advantage by reducing the Netherlands to 35-3 and 57-4. 40 from Boras and 36 from Grooth gave the home side some hope but as the wickets continued to tumble the run rate became too high and eventually the hosts were all out, Hoggard and Sykes both taking 3 wickets.

Star Player: Thonely, for his dramatic innings of 86, the only one past 50.

Warwickshire v Sussex - No result
No play due to rain
