County Champ Day 4/2 and Pro40 Cricket & Tables - 15th July

A day for the bowlers in the four CB40 matches that were not affected by the rain. While in the two continuing Championship matches it was the batters who enjoyed the better of the day.

County Championship

Day 4

Warwickshire v Sussex - Match drawn
War - 400-8
Sus - 191

The rain finally eased off in Birmingham and the visitors made full use of the overs, speeding their total past 300 by the early afternoon. Troughton made 81, while Bell was caught for 57 but lower in the order Clarke found the boundary regularly as he went to 110 not out in just 105 balls, meaning Warwickshire could reach 400 and another batting bonus point.
In reply Sussex worked their way to 87-2 before a series of collapses, mostly caused by spinner Patel (5 for 77), meant they were eventually all out, giving Warwickshire full bowling points.

Points: Warwickshire 11, Sussex 5

Day 2

Northamtonshire v Glamorgan
Glamorgan won the toss and decided to field
Nor - 336-5

The game began badly for Northamptonshire with Peters falling to the final ball of the first over for 0, while Coetzer made 22 but he too went early. The hosts then started to dig in and made it to 97 before losing Wakely for 30. That brought together Sales and Newton who both made half-centuries and put the hosts on top by taking the score past 200. Their partnership went on to 187 before Newton was out for 117. Sales though pressed on and overnight is 129 not out, giving Northamptonshire a strong base.

Pro40 Cricket

Surrey v Nottinghamshire - Nottinghamshire win by 5 wickets
Surrey won the toss and decided to bat
Sur - 123
Not - 124-5

A crazy start to the match saw Nottinghamshire make the unusual decision to open the bowling with Samit Patel. The gamble paid off as he had Roy lbw to the third ball. Pattinson opened at the other end and took two wickets in two balls leaving Surrey on 5-3. Patel was taken out of the attack straight away, but any hope the hosts had of surviving for a while was blown away as Gurney had de Bruyn caught excellently by Voges at slip. Then to cap it all Pattinson forced Burns to top edge a pull to Lumb in the 4th over and the home camp was reeling at 8-5.
Finally things began to settle down and there were ironic cheers from the local crowd when Spriegel hit the first boundary. Ansari battled with him and together they took the score to 46, before Ansari also top edged.
Captain Batty added 43 with Spriegel but both of them departed before Surrey could reach 100. Nottinghamshire looked to wrap up the innings and were only held up briefly by Lewis. Pattinson finshed with 4 for 22.
In return Nottinghamshire were largely untroubled, as they batted sufficiently to never look like losing. Batty picked up two wickets as the visitors slipped from 96-2 to 105-5 but Taylor (41*) and the ever reliable Read (13*) saw the game home.

Star Player: Pattinson for his three wickets at the start of the match that all but dictated the result.

Somerset v Scotland - Somerset win by 60 runs
Somerset won the toss and decided to bat
Som - 206
Sco - 146

Somerset began powerfully as both Kieswetter (56) and Compton (23) put bat to ball. The 50 came up in the 7th over, but the hosts pressed on. This though may have been their undoing as Compton and, next man, Trego departed with the score on 70. Soon after Kieswetter also went and Scotland had fought back.
Hildreth (26) and Buttler (32) put on 50 but both fell quickly preventing Somerset from building a big score. More late wickets eventually restricted the home side to just 206, Davey took the last wicket as he finished with 3 for 22 from 5.4 overs.
Scotland were never in this contest though. Early wickets left them crushed at 31-4 and they never recovered despite 40 from Berrington. Meschede  (4 for 27) kept the wickets falling in the middle of the innings to prevent a late come back.
Star Player: Keiswetter, for the strong start he gave to Somerset, without which they might have been stranded well short of 200.

Hampshire v Durham - Hampshire win by 4 wickets
Hampshire won the toss and decided to field
Dur - 200-7
Ham - 201-6

Hampshire made good their decision to put Durham in by picking up the wickets of Mustard and Stoneman in the first 8 overs. Stokes and Collingwood followed shortly after and the visitors were struggling on 59-4. Muchall and Benkenstein (31) added 83 to boost the total but Hampshire remained in the driving seat with more wickets falling late on. Muchall hit another 6 in the final over and a four off the final ball to lift Durham to 200, but leave himself on 96 not out.
Hampshire, conversely, opened with a partnership worth 73, but then had Katich (59*) to thank as regular wickets fell. At 147-3 the hosts looked to have the game sown up but Borthwick kept the fans guessing by taking 4 for 51. Hampshire eventually sneaked home with 10 balls to spare.

Star Player: Muchall for the stand out innings of 96 from 99 balls, with five 4s and two 6s.

Derbyshire v Unicorns - Derbyshire win by 35 runs
Unicorns won the toss and decided to field
Der - 235-7
Uni - 200

Derbyshire made a steady start at home after having been inserted. Khawaja and Hughes (66) brought the 50 up in exactly 10 overs, but they were only just getting started. Their partnership built steadily until Hughes went with the score on 138. Durston picked up where he left off, but Khawaja dominated the next period of play as he went to 104, including two 6s, before being bowled.
Despite the lack of wickets the Unicorns kept the scoring tight and when Derbyshire looked at attack late on they lost Redfern and Park cheaply. Durston (44) though was still there and he lofted his second six in the final over to lift the hosts to a score that left the game in the balance.
None of the Unicorns players managed to turn good starts into big scores so that they slipped from 100-2 to 100-4 and 145-4 to 186-9. Reece made 59, with two 6s but found little other help despite the acheviable run rate. Turner was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 54.
Star Player: Khawaja for his excellent hundred, the best performance of the game.

Gloucestershire v Essex - No result
No play due to rain

Middlesex v Leicestershire - No result
