County Champ Day 1 and CB40 Cricket - 18th July

Welcome to another round of cricket; 7 matches began today, four in Division 1 of the Championship, two in Division 2, and a CB40 match, to keep us entertained. Here is the best of the action.

County Championship

Day 1

Derbyshire v Yorkshire
Yorkshire won the toss and decided to bat
Yor - 219
Der - 135-7

It was even stevens in this top of the table clash this morning as Yorkshire put together a couple of decent partnerships, but Derbyshire pegged them back to keep the game level. Jaques (61) and Ballance (46) then put on 81 together but Turner collected 3 wickets as the visitors lost two wickets on 175 and three on 185. Derbyshire had their tails up, and despite 34 for the 9th wicket the hosts soon wrapped up the innings, with Durston taking the final wicket to claim 3 for 23.
Madsen and Linekar then put on 43 for the first wicket to start taking the game away from Yorkshire, but the visitors weren't finished for the day just yet. Ashraf took 2 for 13 in 8 overs as Derbyshire slipped to 80-4 after Linekar went for 33. Harmison also chipped in before the close picking up three wickets, including those of Durston and Clare to once more wrench back control of the match and leave Derbyshire stunned on 105-7. Also worrying for the home side, 17 wickets fell today in just 94.1 overs.

Lancashire v Worcestershire
Worcestershire won the toss and decided to bat
Wor - 291
Lan - 13-0

Worcestershire built steadily in the early morning as they went to 40-0 but then Lancashire responded with Croft picking up 2 wickets in his first two overs. The visitors were reduced to 64-3, and only Hughes (32) had made it past 15. Shortly after Kerrigan picked up two wickets in two balls, both caught by Croft, leaving Worcestershire in deep trouble on 93-6. Pardoe (55) and Scott though set about rebuilding the innngs and slowly pulled themselves back into the game. Kerringan and Croft were bowling over after over but not enjoying their success of earlier as the batsmen extended their partnership past 100.
Pardoe was eventually run out (by who else, Croft), after the partnership had reached 127, but Scott marched on to a superb hundred shortly before the close. This is only his 4th first class century but from today's performance you'd think he hit many more. Sadly he was the last man out for 106, as Worcestershire just missed out on a third batting bonus point.
Lancashire then went to 13-0 by the close as 101.1 overs were bowled in the day.

Nottinghamshire v Surrey
Surrey won the toss and decided to field
Not - 178-5

Nottinghamshire eased to 35-0 this morning before Surrey fought back taking 4 wickets for just 24 runs. Lumb went past 8,000 first class runs but perished cheaply. Overcast conditions may have helped the bowling side who bowled well, and the visitors were completely on top when Taylor became the fifth wicket with the score on 89. Four of the top five had made it to double figures, but none of them had passed 25 as Surrey's bowlers shared the wickets. The runs were still flowing however and Nottinghamshire made it to 118 by lunch.
In between rain breaks Voges (38*) and Read (49*) fought back for the hosts with a partnership currently worth 94. They will continue tomorrow and hope for better weather and more play.

Sussex v Durham
Sussex won the toss and decided to field
Dur - 92-4

The problems that have plagued Durham this season continued today as they made another bad start to a four-day match. Anyon took two wickets in as many balls to reduce the visitors to 1-2 and Stokes (20) also went with the score on 34. Stoneman (50) dug in but on reaching his half-century fell lbw to Panesar leaving the score on 84-4. After lunch rain arrived and no more play was possible.

Somerset v Warwickshire
Somerset won the toss and decided to field
War - 27-1

Only 10.4 overs were possible at Taunton and Westwood was unfortunate to be caught just as the rain began to fall. Chopra remains not out on 17.

Gloucestershire v Leicestershire
No play due to a waterlogged outfield

CB40 Cricket

Essex v Middlesex - Middlesex win by 9 wickets
Middlesex won the toss and decided to field
Ess - 146-7
Mid - 148-1

Two wickets in two balls gave Middlesex an early edge, but a partnership of 50 between Pettini (44) and Westley boosted Essex's total. They were both dismissed for two runs however and when Napier and ten Doeschate were both caught by Malan, Essex were in trouble on 90-6. Step up Wheater, he cracked three 6s in a 19 ball 33 and along with Mickleburgh (22*) gave the hosts some impetus before the break.
Middlesex however made a mockery of the total thanks to an opening partnership that knocked off almost all the runs. Rogers was eventually out for 64 from 60 balls but Malan remained to see the visitors home at 10.30pm, finishing not out on 76 from 68 balls.

Star Player: Roland-Jones, for his three wickets, two early on to restrict Essex's top order, and also Wheater, who could have added an extra 10-15 to the score.
