County Champ Day 4/3/2 and Pro40 cricket 13th July

Today three matches saw no play due to the continuing inclement weather, while in the others batsmen ruled the wickets with a couple of huge scores.

County Championship

Day 4

Worcestershire v Durham - Match drawn
Dur - 234 & 67-0
Wor - 205
No play due to rain

Points: Worcestershire 7, Durham 7

Day 3

Surrey v Lancashire
Lan - 485-7d
Sur - 430-5
Lancashire added 60 runs in the morning session with Croft finishing unbeaten on 154 and passing 4000 first class career runs in the process. Then they looked to put Surrey under pressure. The home side lost Burns to the first ball of the innings but didn't panic and went on to bat sensibly. From 49-2 de Bruyn (94) and Pietersen put on 181 for the third wicket and by now the latter was really in to his stride. Batting in the championship like he hasn't since leaving Nottinghamshire back in 2004 he crashed the ball to all parts of the ground as his strike rate soared past 120! By now any thoughts of Lancashire bowling Surrey out twice for a possible innings victory were long gone.
After slowing slightly the big man brought up his double hundred from just 170 balls. Shortly after he slapped another four to take Surrey past 400 and a fifth batting point in just 81 overs. At that point in Lancashire's innings the visitors had all of 245.
From then on Pietersen (234*) began swinging again and conecting with most. Along with Batty he took 24 from the final three overs of the day, reducing their defecit to just 55. All in all 490 runs were scored in the day!

Hampshire v Yorkshire
Yor - 350-9d
Ham - 39-0

A mixed day for Yorkshire saw four of their top seven batsmen record single figure scores including Bairstow, who was caught behind first ball, as they slipped to 161-7. Only Root was showing any resistance and made his way to a steady century giving the scorecard a lop-sided look. With Patterson (37) at the other end he scored most of the 8th wicket partnership, which was eventually broken at 121 runs. Harmison didn't last long and it looked as though the innings was nearly over, but not for Root.
Last batsman Ashraf barely had to face a ball in the evening session as his partner batted on and on. The partnership passed 50 with Ashraf having scored 4. Then Root really went on the attack, and, having added 15 from one over, took Yorkshire to 350 and a fourth batting point, whereupon they declared and the opener had carried his bat for a magnificent 222, beating his previous best by 62, not bad for a 21 year-old.
There was still time for 12 overs but McKenzie and Adams played them out successfully.

Middlesex v Nottinghamshire
Mid - 98 & 233-2
Not - 329

A surprising amount of play was possible but Nottinghamshire failed to take advantage. A magnificent innings from Strauss (127*) wiped out the defecit for the loss of just two wickets just before tea. With the track flattening out Robson made 26 before being caught behind but then the England captain teamed up with Rogers (59) to put on 143 for the second wicket and effectively even the game up.
Once again rain arrived during the tea interval and no more play was possible.

Gloucestershire v Essex
Glo - 284-4
No play due to a waterlogged outfield

Day 2

Warwickshire v Sussex
War - 175-3
No play due to rain

Pro40 Cricket

Northamptonshire v Derbyshire - No result
Derbyshire won the toss and decided to field
Nor - 220-8
Der - 19-2

After a couple of early wickets Northamptonshire built a decent innings through Wakely (85) and Sales (74). Their partnership put on 152 in 27.2 overs, but sadly the rest of the line up faded as Derbyshire finished strongly. Turner ended with 4 for 38 to keep the hosts to a par score.
Derbyshire's reply began badly as Hughes and Durston were dismissed in consequtive overs to leave the visitors on 19-2. Tragically rain then began to fall and no more play was possible making that the third Pro40 match to be abandoned this week.
